President Trump would like to make it easier for genetically modified plants and animals to enter the Food supply. This week he has signed an executive order directing federal agencies to simplify the “regulatory maze” for producers.
This will no doubt please the biotech industry as they rapidly find new ways to modify life to their desires.
“There needs to be an assurance of safety for those products,” said Greg Jaffe the biotechnology director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, who was among those briefed by government officials on a call before the order was announced.
‘Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed changing its regulations in a way that would mean much of the genetically modified corn and soy grown in the U.S. today would not necessarily have been subject to special oversight.‘ [source]
However, safety cannot be assured and if it is assured we know we are being lied to. In order for the safety of these products to be assured there would need to be decades of research into the generational effects these modified organisms have on both humans and the environment. We simply do not know and therefore to make it easier for these GMO’s to enter our food supply is irresponsible and potentially very dangerous.
