A 15-year-old in Michigan was incarcerated during the coronavirus pandemic after a judge ruled that not completing her schoolwork violated her probation. “It just doesn’t make any sense,” said the girl’s mother.
15-Year-old Grace was on probation for theft and fighting with her mother. Her school in Beverly Hills switched their teaching to home learning due to the coronavirus, Grace fell behind and failed to complete her work.
Grace who suffers with learning difficulties was incarcerated in May for her evil crime, no seriously she was.
Judge Mary Ellen Brennan who sentenced Grace said:
“She hasn’t fulfilled the expectation with regard to school performance, I told her she was on thin ice and I told her that I was going to hold her to the letter, to the order, of the probation.”[1]
How on earth can this punishment be justified, we are talking about a young girl, with ADHD, a young girl who already struggled with learning in a classroom environment then being told to learn from home online.
Its called Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for a reason. But even so, even if this was not a child with learning difficulties, locking them up for not completing their homework?
Grace, who has ADHD, said she felt unmotivated and overwhelmed when online learning began April 15, about a month after schools closed. Without much live instruction or structure, she got easily distracted and had difficulty keeping herself on track, she said.[1]
Charisse, Grace’s mother said:
“It just doesn’t make any sense, Every day I go to bed thinking, and wake up thinking, ‘How is this a better situation for her?’”[1]
I agree, it doesn’t make any sense.
